About Bitney College Prep High School
Bitney Prep was founded in 1998 by the Bitney Springs Charter Council. Our doors opened in the fall of 1999, and our first class graduated in 2001. We are a tuition-free public charter school, sponsored by the Nevada County Superintendent of Schools. Enrollment is limited, offering a high level of personal attention and support to every student. Our school culture is founded on high academic achievement, respect, and service to community. Bitney graduates are ready for the next stage of their lives; whether that is continued education at the college or university level, entering the work force, or pursuing other personal goals.
Our core curriculum is a single track program based on the University of California “a to g” entrance requirements. While we do not necessarily regard standardized testing as the only means to accurately measure student achievement, our Academic Performance Index (API) scores over the last decade have consistently placed us equal to or greater than the larger comprehensive high schools in the county (see our download page for our Academic Accountability Report Card from the California Charter Schools Association).
Bitney Prep is a member of the California Charter Schools Association.

Bitney College Prep is fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). We are currently operating under our second six-year term of certification that is valid through June 30, 2018. Our first six-year term was awarded in the spring of 2005.
WASC accreditation is an ongoing process. The school staff, administration, and governing board pay close attention to the parameters of our Schoolwide Action Plan, and make adjustments to it annually. In addition, in the spring of 2015 we will submit a Mid-Term Progress Report, followed up by a one-day visitation.
As was the case in 2005, the process of finalizing the 2012 WASC Self-Study Report involved many people across the school community, and once again afforded us an outstanding opportunity to look ourselves in the mirror, see where we are, and more clearly define our path to the future.
Former Director Bruce Herring submitted the final report in the fall of 2011, at which time we enjoyed a three-day visit from three California educators. The Self-Study report itself is downloadable from the downloads section of our website and contains valuable information and data for the Bitney community.
Dear Bitney School Community,
I am honored and very happy to serve as the Director of Bitney College Prep High School. There is such wonderful energy at the school and I feel a strong commitment among students, staff, and parents to the values and characteristics that define a very unique learning environment. I believe Bitney represents a real commitment to 21st Century Learning and I am eager to help the school meet its mission, vision and full potential.
I grew up in Nevada County, attended local schools, and worked for the Nevada Joint Union High School District in varying positions for 12 years. In 1995, my family and I began an odyssey of living and learning abroad where I held administrative leadership positions at international schools in Mexico, Israel, Poland, San Francisco, and Peru. Now back home to stay, I believe Bitney College Prep is the absolute perfect fit for me and I look forward eagerly to what lies ahead.
Please don’t hesitate to drop by to say “Hi.” My door is always open!
